The Akron Zips women’s basketball team dropped contests over the weekend to Cal Poly and UC Davis. They competed in the Cal Poly Classic in California.

In their first game of the tournament, the Zips took on Cal Poly. Akron fell 84-74 on Friday. Rachel Tecca and Hanna Luburgh predominately did the scoring for the Zips. Tecca scored 28 points while Luburgh finished with 24.

Akron was down most of the game. Despite a quick start, Akron found themselves with a 9-4 lead in the early game. Cal Poly was able to clinch a 44-49 advantage at the half. In the second half, the scoring slowed down. The Zips were unable to run-and-gun like they wanted to and eventually lost the game by 10 points.

In the contest, Akron shot just over 40 percent from the field. Cal Poly knocked down over 45 percent of their shots. Cal Poly’s scoring came from three players: Molly Schlemer (23 points), Ariana Elegado (16 points) and Jonae Ervin (14 points).

After losing the first game of the tournament, the Zips hoped to rebound with a win over UC Davis. However, despite a late comeback from the team from Ohio, they fell 71-58. Again, most of the scoring came from Tecca and Luburgh. Tecca finished that game like she did the first, with 28 points. Luburgh had 18 points.

The Zips need to find another player or two who can score. Though Tecca and Luburgh are still the top scorers in the Mid-American Conference, it was a dangerous game that they were playing.

Tecca and Luburgh are both strong, reliable players. However, the Zips need that third or fourth scoring threat that will help them put up more points and take some of the pressure off the two.

The Zips lost Sina King over the offseason and King was supposed to be that other player. Akron will hope to develop that third player before the Mid-American Conference season starts.

In the game against UC Davis, the Zips fell behind early and were never really able to get back in. At halftime, the Zips were down 17 points, 41-24. Akron won the second half by four points, but it was not near enough to clinch the victory after the disappointing first half.

The closest the Zips were able to get to was 13 points. However, the game was virtually never in doubt for UC Davis.

Akron fell to a record of 3-4. Cal Poly improved their schedule 2-3 and UC Davis now has a record of 2-4. Akron next will have a 10-day rest and then will take on Cincinnati on Dec. 17. They then will play Rochester College on Dec. 20 and then Youngstown State on Dec. 29.
