40 year collection of Emily Davis Gallery unveiled

By Ellen Papp, Arts & Life Writer

Visitors to the Emily Davis Gallery will be able to view “From the Vault,” a showcase of selected artworks from the 40-year-old collection in Folk Hall.

The gallery has presented free exhibitions and lectures since its opening in 1974, and has exhibited works by national and international modern artists. It has played a crucial role in educating UA students about curating, installing and preserving artwork.

The opening reception will be held on Dec. 4th from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be on view until Feb. 27, 2015.

As the opening for “From the Vault” commences, there will be a closing reception for “Facade“ in the upper and lower atrium and Projects Gallery of Folk Hall. The reception is free to the public and food will be provided.

“From the Vault” explores the history of the gallery and all of its collections with a diverse range of works by visiting artists, professors, and alumni from the school.

A variety of media from ceramics to printmaking to painting will be on view at the showcase. The art represents various artists and eras in the gallery’s history.

One example of what visitors will see is “Dog,” which was created by Ohio artist Jack Earl, and was in one of the first exhibitions at the Emily Davis Gallery as part of the works in clay in 1976.

A series of Andy Warhol prints that were recently donated to The University of Akron by The  Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts will also be displayed.

Visitors will be able to view all this unique work, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, with later hours on selected dates.

Make sure to stop in to catch a glimpse of the history of The Emily Davis Gallery and what it has been able to produce and bring to The Myers School Art.
