Football springs into action

Akron Zips prepare to show their stuff as they compete in the annual Spring Game Saturday, April 18. Teammates on the football team will be put against each other in this game as an exercise to determine who’s best suited for each position.

The first half will be a regular NCAA football game, with live punting and kicking. The second half will be different timing system as the game moves to a moving clock to speed the game along.

Under fourth year head coach Terry Bowden the Zips are 11-25 and ready to make an impact this season.

“Our No. 1 priority this spring [is finding] the best 11 players on offense and defense. We have to get competition between individuals, so that the best 11 compete and show up on offense, and the best 11 on defense. Our offense will not be perfectly polished by the end of the spring, or our defense, but we want to execute our fundamentals and compete until we find the best 11. That’s what we’re trying to do right now. We need to teach good fundamentals. So the key is getting the right people at every position and making them fundamentally sound.” Bowden said about what is most important in spring training.

The game starts at 12 p.m., but before the game, Akron will be holding Zips Fest where fans and students can play games and run obstacles on inflatable courses. Akron Marketing will also be giving ice cream to students who come out to watch their team in the game.
