The University of Akron women’s golf team had an incredible couple of days at the Johnie Imes Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The Zips recorded the lowest scoring tournament since the program began in 2008, all three rounds finding their way onto the all-time scoring list.
The team finished ninth overall for the tournament, but that result was inconsequential of the performances overall. In addition, Akron received a handful of individual best performances.
The Zips opened the tournament by posting a 301 (+13), that was good for 10th on the all-time scoring list, but that was not good enough for them. Akron followed with a pair record-breaking performances as the starting-five achieved the program’s best team score with an even-par 288-stroke effort, replacing the previous individual team round record of 293 (+5) set in 2011.
The Zips also eclipsed the best team tournament two-round score of 600 (+24) set in 2008 with a new team-best 589 (+13) 36-hole total.
In the final round on Tuesday, the Zips used a 298 (+10) team total, which ended up sixth all-time, to finalize the best 54-hole tournament score in school history.
The Zips’ 887 (+23) score for 54-holes bested the previous mark of 891 (+27) recorded in 2008.
Individually, the Zips posted all-time best performances. Frida Fougberg led the Zips’ scoring efforts and tied a three-round best scoring mark. The senior finished the tournament, tied for 29th with a 74, 72, and 74 for a 220 (+4) total, and matched her second-best performance to date.
Pader Her carded a 1-under par 71 that was good for second on the all-time list and added a round of 73 to tie the school’s best two-round performance at a 144 (E) strokes. She ended with a 221 (+5).
Danielle Nicholson shot the Zips’ lowest round with a 2-under par 70 which tied the all-time best mark, and finished third in team scoring with a 222 (+6), while Makayla Dull achieved Akron’s final day low-round of 73 (+1) and finished at 224 (+8). Rounding out the scoring was Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva with a 246 (+23) tournament total.
The women return to action this Sunday and Monday at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational in Warren, Ohio at the Avalon Lakes Golf & Country Club.
