Zips sit in second place at Firestone Invitational

The University of Akron’s men’s golf team find themselves residing in second place after the first two rounds of the Firestone Invitational. The Zips trail Maryland by four shots with the third round being played this morning starting at 8:30 a.m..
Leading the Zips through the first two rounds was George Bayliss who shot a pair of 70s on the par-72, 7,125 yard Firestone Country Club North Course. His score of -4 puts him fourth individually, four shots behind leader David Kocher of Maryland. Bayliss managed to card an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
Louis Birchall finished his first two rounds by shooting identical 72s for his two round score of 144 to put him in a tie for 20th.
Rounding out the scoring for Akron was Elliot Grayson (75, 70 – 145), Ryan Harris (73, 73 – 146), and J.B. Williams (75, 71 – 146). Harris’ highlight on the day was an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole in the later round.
Akron, as a team shot a 290 (+2) through the first round, which put them in fifth place, trailing front running Maryland by six strokes.
Later in the day, the Zips shaved off seven strokes off the opening round in shooting a 283 to narrow the gap with Maryland.
The team score of 283 that Akron had in the second round was the best team round of any of the 16 teams in the field.
