Hannah Plybon drives for two of her game high 19 points against Rochester.

Hannah Plybon scored 19 points and four other players hit double digits in the scoring colums as The University of Akron women’s basketball team made it look easy by defeating the Rochester Warriors, 103-37, Wednesday evening at the James A. Rhodes Arena.

The 103 points registered by the Zips was the fourth best scoring total in the history of the program, and the first time Akron (2-4) went over the century mark since Nov. 25, 2014 in a game against Valparaiso.

Rochester (6-6) actually held a lead of 5-3 after Jackie Highstreet hit a three-pointer with 7:19 left in the opening period.

The Zips then hit the Warriors with a 19-1 run over the next five and a half minutes starting with a pair of free throws from Greta Burry and highlighted by 10 points from Plybon, including two long distance shots for three points.

A steal and subsequent layup from Hannah Scipio gave the Zips a 22-6 advantage with 1:57 to play in the first period.

Burry contributed a career-high 18 points after hitting seven of her 10 shots from the field and only missing one of her five attempts from the free throw line.

DiAndra Gibson notched her first double-double by chipping in 10 points and grabbing 12 boards. Anita Brown just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Lauren Hung added 12 points.

Akron continued to stretch the lead in the second period as Gibson poured in eight of her points in the quarter and helped the Zips to a 49-16 lead at the intermission.

The Warriors never mounted a charge in the second half until going on a 6-0 run but Akron had already posted its largest lead of the game, 99-31, with 4:19 left in the game.

All 13 players for Akron scored in the contest with 12 of them playing at least 10 minutes and no one played over 22.

The Zips shot a respectable 45.7 percent (37-of-81) from the floor for the game, while holding the Warriors to 21.6 percent (11-of-51) of their shot attempts. Akron controlled most of the stats such as a 58-35 edge on the boards, including a 40-10 advantage in points in the paint and a 24-5 control in second-chance points.

Akron won the battle of the bench scoring 43-33, and also forced 31 turnovers, which results in 38 points for the hosts.

The Zips return to action on Saturday when they host University of Central Florida (UCF) for a 1 p.m. contest at the JAR.
