University of Akron Police Department (UAPD) Detective Angela Paonessa and Officer Kevin Kabellar joined a handful of women in the rec center on March 16 to teach helpful self-defense techniques.

This class was held as part of Women’s History Month.

The hands-on workshop presented easy-to-use techniques with example scenarios for participants.

The class was geared toward women because they are typically the target of assaults or robberies – 99 percent of the time, according to Paonessa.

Paonessa also mentioned a few quick tips to decrease your odds of being assaulted regardless of gender: have a strong presence when walking and make your confidence visible; always be aware of your environment; verbalize to make your intentions clear; and if you feel threatened, shout to draw attention to your situation.

The class pushed students from their comfort zones, encouraging them to yell in the simulated situations.

In addition, the officers discussed dangers that are unique to the urban environment of the Akron area.

UAPD will host another workshop for women on March 30. Anyone seeking self-defense training can reach UAPD at 330-973-7123.
