Want to hire into a field that aligns with your major or area of study? The University of Akron’s upcoming Career Fairs, all taking place in the Student Union, will put students in direct contact with companies looking for internships or full-time employment.

The Career Fairs cater to all majors, but each day targets specific disciplines: engineering, science, and, technology on Tuesday Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a general career fair on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and a fair for graduate students on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Students are required to register for the Engineering Career Fair at the engineering office on the second floor of the Auburn Science & Engineering Center.

Being prepared for the career fair is essential. It is not a particularly daunting task, but a little prep work goes a long way and makes a tremendous difference. For a first-time attendee, there are several ways to make the most of the career fair. Firstly: sell yourself to potential employers. Selling oneself includes a professional presentation (attire and physical presence), one’s attitude (communication skills), and the ability to highlight strengths and skills in conversation (have copies of resume in hand).

Juniors Madicyn Mansueti and Sara Nycuff, both of whom work at the Career Center, say that students often fail to dress well and bring copies of their resumes.

Professional attire is necessary to convey a professional appearance. Dress shoes over sneakers goes a long way. Getting the attire is only half the battle. Be sure to iron it, tuck shirts and blouses in neatly, and tie that tie right.

Once your war-paint is on, stand up straight, look people in the eye when you speak, and listen carefully when someone is talking. Physical stature is important. Look the part and be confident! Approach a table at the Career Fair with a smile and confidence. If this is your first time, everything will be a new experience, but the objective will be to soak in information and present yourself in a clear and concise manner.

If all of this sounds like a lot of work, there is help! The Career Center in the Student Union, on the second floor, can provide many Career Fair tips and tricks. In the Career Center, you can review resume and cover letters, engage in mock interviews, and explore a career path. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic to help. They have lots of experience regarding the Career Fair and see the same mistakes made over and over again. Learn from them!

If all of this seems overwhelming, there are specific career fair prep workshops to help sort out the details. Workshops are available in Student Union room 316, Wednesday, Sept. 28 11 a.m. and Wednesday Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Give 330-972-7747 a call or career@uakron.edu an email with any questions. For the Engineering Fair, call 330-972-7847.
