Zips draw with VCU after scoreless match

The University of Akron men’s soccer team (5-3-1) finished Tuesday night’s match with its first tie of the season. A 90-minute game and two 10-minute overtimes could not generate a goal for either team.

Although the Zips did not get the win that they hoped for, there was still something good to take away from the match. Junior Stuart Holthusen made his 2016 season debut for the Zips after missing all of the previous games with an injury. Although the forward couldn’t come up with a goal, he led the team in shots with six, including a near game-winner at the end of the second overtime that went just wide of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bun Lundt also registered his fifth clean sheet of the season by stopping three shots. Lundt has still yet to surrender a goal in a home match this season.

The Zips will be back in action Oct. 7 when they host the Buffalo Bulls. The match will be the Zips’ first versus a Mid-American Conference opponent this season. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m.
