Men’s soccer defeats Grand Canyon in double-overtime

The University of Akron men’s soccer team beat Grand Canyon University on Wednesday night, 3-2, in double-overtime at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field.

Junior forward Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand) scored twice in the game, including the game-winning goal in the 104th minute to send the Akron faithful home with a victory. Holthusen also scored to put Akron up 2-1 in the 60th minute. He now has four goals in just seven games this season.

Jonathan Lewis scored the first goal, his second of the season, and he also picked up his team-leading seventh assist of the season. Niko De Vera, Robby Dambrot, and Ezana Kahsay also picked up assists. Grand Canyon picked up goals from Niki Jackson and Jamie Olabarria.

The Zips outshot the Lopes 20-12, and had more shots on goal (8-4). Holthusen and Lewis each had four shots while Holthusen led the game with three shots on goal.

The Zips will get back to the pitch on Saturday in their regular season finale against Western Michigan. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field in Akron.
