As the semester comes to an end, it’s time for the winter class of 2016 to start planning for what lies beyond The University of Akron. But before they turn their tassels from right to left, the University is throwing a week to celebrate them.

“Senior week provides events and opportunities for seniors to celebrate the accomplishment of graduating from The University of Akron,” says Assistant Director of Campus Programs Dave Vale. “The purpose of Senior Week is to instill pride into and appreciate the graduating students as they finish their degrees at UA by hosting events promoting an engaging environment.”

Senior week, which takes place between Saturday, Dec. 3 to Dec. 10, is a full week of celebrating the senior class. Class of 2016 commemorative pins will be given away throughout the week. There will be a time each day between noon and 11 p.m. to decorate graduation caps in the student game room. Then, to remember the school mascot, seniors will take pictures with Zippy.

Seniors can also get their resume reviewed, participate in mock interviews, and attend campus-to-career workshops. There will also be a service project that is open to employees and alumni.

“The week gives me the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the graduating students I know and have worked with during their time at U,” Vale says.

As exciting as it sounds, the idea of having an entire week for the seniors is fairly new. The Department of Student Life created and planned the first Senior Week in May 2015, according to Vale.

“We were pleased to see more than 250 students take advantage of the programs offered during the week,” Vale said. “Wanting to recognize graduating students in the Fall of 2015, we hosted another Senior Week with similar events to Spring 2015 in December. Currently, we are hoping to continue to plan and implement Senior Weeks the week before Finals Week in both the fall and spring semesters.”

For the seniors graduating in the spring, there will be different events planned. But for the fall class of 2016, there are plenty of events to attend to honor your time spent here at The University of Akron.
