Volleyball spikes their way to 7-5 record

Written by: Parker Perry

The Akron Zips volleyball team won two of three matches over the weekend at the Bryant Invitational tournament.

The Zips defeated Holy Cross and host team Bryant University, but fell in their last match to Northern Kentucky University.

Before the tournament, Akron volleyball head coach Ron Arenz said that he felt the tournament was an important part of the schedule, as it is the final non-conference game of the year.

“We want to finish our pre-conference part of the season on a high note,” Arenz said. “Taking another tournament would obviously put us in a good position before entering the MAC.”

Though they were unable to win the tournament (NKU finished with a 3-0 record), taking two of three matches put the Zips in a good position with a 7-5 record. The Zips ensured that they would exit the tournament with a record above .500 by winning their first two games. The first match was with The Academy of the Holy Cross.

Holy Cross entered and left the tournament unable to claim a victory.

Akron was able to sweep the Knights with powerful kills by Tina Dimitrijevs and Paiton Twitty. Dimitrijevs won the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Co-Player of the Week last week. Twitty may have that award on her horizon.

The two combined for 27 kills between them. Alex Cocklin got in on the action too, as she produced 12 kills of her own.

In their second match, the Zips continued to dominate. Against Bryant, they again were able to sweep their foes. Dimitrijevs continued her assault, posting another 15-kill day.

The match against Northern Kentucky, the Zips’ only loss, was a bit disappointing. NKU has just entered Division I, and though they have a solid team, the match was an upset. The sets were close throughout, including the first set that took extra games to decide. However, NKU was able to pull out the match in four sets.

Akron will next open up their 2012 Mid-American Conference season when they take on Buffalo at the James A. Rhodes arena Thursday. The event is free to all students with a valid Zip Card. Tickets for non-students are $6.
