Sympson's sports view: football

Written by: Matt Sympson

It was another crazy weekend of sports. This weekend, the football team fell to 1-5, the Browns fell to 0-5 on the season, and the Steelers got a must-win victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Akron football

Even though we lost to Bowling Green, our defense played exceptionally better — but they still gave up 24 points. We are definitely an improved team from last season, even though we have the same amounts of wins now that we did last season. Our defense still has a lot of work to do, because we gave up way too many points.

The refs still made a couple of bad calls, but weren’t nearly as bad as the ones who refereed the Miami game two weeks ago. It’s heart-wrenching to see us fight so hard each week and come up short, especially against our conference opponents.

Akron will have a tough match-up next weekend as they travel to face Ohio University on Saturday. It’ll be a difficult game, but I hope the Zips come out strong and earn their second win of the season.

Professional football

Sunday used to be such a boring day, until the NFL started up again. As a huge football fan, I look forward to Sundays every weekend from Sept. until Feb.

The Browns fell to the New York Giants on Sunday and dropped to 0-5 on the season. I thought the Browns would pull off the upset, as they went up 14-0 early on the Giants, but the defending Super Bowl Champions had different plans. Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden looked decent for the first couple of drives, hitting wide receiver Josh Gordon with a long pass. However, with the loss on Sunday, and the New Orleans Saints winning Sunday night, the Browns are now the worst team in the NFL. They return home next Sunday to try and get their first win against the Cincinnati Bengals in part two of the battle of Ohio.

I was so happy to see the Steelers come off of their bye week and get a much-needed win against the Eagles. The Eagles had way too many turnovers; quarterback Michael Vick fumbled the ball multiple times. The Steelers defense still looked shaky, but they look like they’re improving. The Steelers came back to win the game with a field goal 16-14. It wasn’t the cleanest win, but I’ll take it. It’ll be a short week for the Steelers, though, as they’ll be back on Thursday to play the Tennessee Titans in Nashville.

I’m hoping our football team can win at least three games this season. Then I would be satisfied. I still have a ton of faith in head coach Terry Bowden, and I believe that he holds the tools to improve our football team.
