Holmgren to retire as president of Browns

Written by: Matt Sympson

New Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III is already making changes to his new team. His newest change: letting go of Browns president Mike Holmgren.

According to NFL.com, Haslam told reporters on Tuesday that following the NFL season, Holmgren will step down as president of the Cleveland Browns.

Haslam will have former Philadelphia Eagles president Joe Banner take over as the CEO. Holmgren will continue to work with Banner between now and the end of the year. This move will take place on Oct. 25.

Haslam has not decided on the fate of Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, who has a 5-17 record in his second year.

Haslam seems to be planning some major changes in the upcoming off-season to get the Browns back on track. The Browns have only had two winning seasons (2002, 2007) since their return to Cleveland.

In the past two seasons as president of the Browns, Holmgren holds a 10-28 record.

Although Holmgren has struggled to make the Browns successful, he does have a couple of Super Bowl championships in his past. He led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory in 1996 but lost the Super Bowl in 1997. He also coached the Seattle Seahawks, which he helped lead to Super Bowl XL, where they lost 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“I think this will be the right move for the Browns,” Browns fan Amanda Van Fossan said. “I’m glad that the new owner is making some moves, and hopefully we can start winning. We’ve already had a dreadful 1-5 start this season, but hopefully next season things can and will start looking up.”

The Browns got their first win of the 2012 NFL season with a win over the Cincinnati Bengals to improve to a 1-5 record.

The Browns will try to turn their season around get their second win of the season Sunday at 1 p.m. as they face the 2-3 Indianapolis Colts. The Browns will get a first glimpse of the Colts’ new quarterback, No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck.

This could be the end of an old era and the beginning of a new era for the Browns. It looks as though Haslam will be cleaning house in the off-season.

It is officially the dawn of a new era for Browns football.
