College Democrats rally for Obama

Written by: Forrest Dukes

The College Democrats at The University of Akron (CDUA) have been working hard this semester to get local college students to reelect President Obama.

“We need to win this election,” said Christen Cox, president of the CDUA. “I understand that many are still hurting, and it seems like we are moving too slowly, but we cannot afford to go back. Equality, fairness and opportunity for every individual is the way to move forward.”

In Cox’s opinion, the policies that Obama has pushed for prove that he is a good president. Among these policies is the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which reestablished a rule for legal actions against pay discrimination based on race, gender, religion or other aspects.

During Obama’s first term, he repealed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Act of 2010, stating that he supported gay marriage.

“It depends on the state,” said Steve Maillard, the vice president of CDUA. “But Obama’s stances on civil rights, foreign policies, the auto bailout and immigration are a few that will help him win this election.”

Cox and Maillard echoed each other when they discussed schooling. If the Affordable Care Act were repealed under the Romney administration, this would mean that students would lose extra money from Pell Grants.

“It has been around 50 years since we have been to the moon; what have we done since then,

when it comes to technology?” Maillard said. “We need to invest more in education — not only monetary, but with our teachers and the curriculum that is being taught.”

Cox said that the country cannot afford to repeat previous mistakes.

“Tax cuts to the wealthy drove us into a ditch,” Cox said. “Obama works for the 99 percent, while Governor Romney will protect the one percent.”
