Citizens cast current events aside

Many American citizens are falling down the slippery slope of ignorance, and it is frightening.

It seems like the majority of people, especially women, don’t seem to care about what is happening in current events.

What’s even more frightening is that Web sites like yahoo.com aren’t helping with this new epidemic of stupidity.

In their list of Top Stories, on March 24, the number seven was How can Jennifer Aniston smoke and work out? Holy Crap. Somebody stop the presses.

Jennifer Aniston can smoke and work out at the same time? Wow.

Oh, and lets not neglect the number 10 story.

Remember Danica McKellar, aka Winnie Cooper, from The Wonder Years? Yeah, well apparently she got married, and we’re supposed to care.

Really, these stories are top news?

It’s common media sources like this that are making people stupid.

The majority of the population doesn’t go to news sources, such as www.cnn.com, to find out what is happening in the world.

Often www.yahoo.com is their only daily dose of news.

So, if McKellar’s wedding is the top story featured on the front page, that’s all people are going to see.

What’s even more scary is no one seems to care that this is the type of news that is being pushed upon the masses. It’s just an accepted fact.

With the United States in a recession, violence in the Middle East and the millions of people that are dying of AIDs in Africa, it is saddening that people even care about frivolous stories like this.

It seems like people are going into denial about the tragedies that are occurring in the world.

People need to realize that ignoring these predicaments isn’t going to make them go away.

Or perhaps on an even sadder note, it may not be that people are ignoring them in hopes they disappear, they might just be too selfish to even care.

That’s what’s wrong with the world; not enough people care about the important issues outside their own little bubble.

Perhaps if more people stopped neglecting the important issues, there would be more future leaders that could really help change things.

If we continue on this path of intellectual self destruction, the future isn’t going to look good.

The population needs to start caring about the important issues, and only then can things start to change.
