The University of Akron’s Greek community will be participating in Greeks in the Streets on Saturday, April 4.
The event, which is led by Zips Programming Network (ZPN) Greek Events Chair Dennis Campbell, is brand new to the University of Akron.
Greek students will be walking around the downtown Akron area picking up trash and cleaning up the community. Students are going to meet in the Commuter Lounge in the Student Union at 9:45 a.m. and will take to the streets at 10 a.m.
Campbell, who has been Greek Events Chair since May 2008, recalls a similar event being done before his arrival to the University of Akron in 2005.
Campbell, who grew up in Akron, is looking forward to the event.
I have lived in Akron my entire life and I want to give back to my community all that I can, he said.
Wanting to reach back out to his community is a big reason why Campbell took the position as Greek Events Chair. It is also why he organized Greeks in the Streets.
I am a firm believer in helping out the community around us, he said.
There will be 40 people who will be designated to the south UA campus out of the approximately 130 people participating.
Although they are not welcoming students outside of the Greek community for this event, Campbell urges students to contact the nonprofit organizations around campus.
Keep Akron Beautiful week begins April 18. Students can contact the website to register. Cleaning supplies and trash disposal will be free for registered participators.
LightsOut Ohio, formerly LightsOut Akron, is an energy conservation event organized by Sierra Club’s Portage Trail Group. It encourages Ohio residents to turn off all non-essential lights for only one hour on Earth Day, which is April 22.
There are plenty of ways to keep the community clean.
Campbell also encourages students to simply pick up trash when they see it on a normal day and to make sure trash makes it into the trash can.
Greeks in the Streets will be working with Downtown Akron Partnership, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Heaven Can Wait Rescue and Adoptions, ACCESS, Inc., Haven of Rest, and Info Line, Inc.
The Greek community also participates in activities such as St. Jude’s Up ’til Dawn program, which benefits children of St. Jude’s hospital.
Relay for Life, organized by the American Cancer Society’s Northeast Ohio region, is often participated in by University of Akron Greeks.
Campbell is hoping this event will make a significant impact on not only University of Akron students, but Akron residents as well.
I hope that we can show to the community that our Greek community is devoted to making our campus better as a whole and also inspire others to take pride in their campus, he said.
