Zips lose Toledo series, keep improving

The University of Akron men’s baseball team continued to improve as a whole this weekend, against the University of Toledo, but still dropped two out of three in the series.

I’m disappointed we didn’t win the series, Zips Head Coach Pat Bangston said. We did a lot of positive things but we just have to find a way to win series’.

In the first game of the series, the Zips defense plagued them. They had as many runs as they did errors and dropped the contest 11-6 to the Rockets.

Farmer fell to 1-4 on the season with an ERA of 6.75.

Toledo’s Justin Collop picked up the victory going six innings and giving 6 earned runs on 11 hits.

The Rockets designated hitter Josh Colliver led the offensive charge going 4-5 with three RBIs.

Zips third baseman Ryan Frazee had a hit in every trip to the plate going 3-3 and driving in three runs to lead the club.

Zips first baseman Brian Kordal continued to slug going 3-5 with 2 RBIs.

Kordal leads the team in Batting Average, hitting at a .353 clip, and in RBIs with 24. Frazee’s seven home runs also pace the club.

The offense was very positive throughout the series with Toledo, Bangston said.

The Zips won 13-4 in game two behind a solid pitching performance from Frank Turocy and a consistent offensive attack.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Turocy settled into a groove giving up just one earned run over the next six innings.

Turocy improved his record to 2-4 and lowered his ERA to 8.71.

The Rockets Mike Inselmann got the loss lasting only an inning and a third and allowing six earned runs on seven hits.

Zips shortstop Kevin Hass led the offense going 3-4 with three RBI including two solo home runs.

Zips first baseman Brian Kordal and third baseman Ryan Frazee also hit home runs helping the club score 13 runs.

The Zips lost in the rubber game to the Rockets Sunday 2-1 in a pitchers duel.

The Zips Chris Bassitt came in the game in the top of the ninth inning and got the loss not retiring a batter and allowing the eventual game-winning run.

The Rockets Jeff Cinadr came in from the bullpen pitching two scoreless innings to get the win.

Zips starting pitcher Benjamin Danziger got a no decision going eight strong innings, giving up an earned run on three hits, and striking out four Rockets.

I was able to locate my pitches and throw my off speed pitches for a strike, Danziger said.

Danziger has pitched well for the Zips with a 1-3 record and an ERA of 3.86.

I just try to go out there and give our team a chance to win, Danziger said.

Danziger said that he feels the Zips are headed in the right direction.

We have got to keep playing the game the right way, Danziger said. We need the ball to bounce our way but we’re right there.

Akron is slated to begin a five game road trip this Tuesday when they head to Pittsburgh to take on the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.

The Panthers are 15-7 on the season including two wins against the Zips.

Akron’s Scott Foster is slated to make his third start of the season against Pitt.

Foster leads the club with a 2.75 ERA and has a 1-0 record on the season.

The Zips will continue the road trip against the 4-20 Youngstown State University Penguins Wednesday with the starting pitcher yet to be determined.
