The Akron Art Museum gained a privileged art exhibit this winter in the form of M.C. Escher.

Escher worked during the mid 1990’s in printmaking and drawing. Many have seen examples of his scientific and mathematical works at least once in their lives. Some of his most popular works include ‘Relativity,’ ‘Drawing Hands,’ and ‘Hand with Globe.’ Akron’s exhibit shows his works throughout his life, starting with his early landscapes to his infinity works of art, which play with the viewers perceptions of space and depth.

This collection is the second of two exhibits in the U.S. originating from the Herakleidon Museum in Athens, Greece. Not only does the exhibit include drawings and prints, but it also has two three-dimensional works M.C. Escher created from his drawings and woodcuts he produced. He was one of the first of his kind by using mathematical formulas to create his art. His works make the viewer think and wonder if his creations could be real.

The Escher collection is on exhibit at the Akron Art Museum until May 29. With student discounts, the exhibit is a great idea for an afternoon away from school work. Also, the museum offers a  permanent collection of artwork from both local and well-known artists. The Akron Art Museum is located at 1 South High in downtown Akron and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
