The Board of Trustees approved a pay raise for President Proenza.

Again?

It seems that every time that tuition increases there is an accompanying pay raise for the president.

His pay has been raised 8.7 percent and is now $385,000.

And this is not the only compensation that Proenza receives for his presidential position.

In addition, he also has performance bonuses, supplemental retirement pay, a university funded house and a leased car.

This isn’t questioning President Proenza or the fact that he deserves the compensation.

Proenza wanted to abstain from salary considerations by the Board of Trustees for a base salary increase due to economic challenges in 2009.

Clearly Proenza sees the need for other things than a pay increase for himself.

While he deserves to receive the pay, it cannot be helped but to wonder if the university could have better spent the money at the current time.

Only one member of the Board of Trustees voted against the pay increase.

Another trustee member refused to vote on the issue. He claimed he didn’t have enough time to research the issue.

Perhaps the issue should have been researched more. This year the university was forced to make up to $3 million in budget cuts because of the loss of investments and loss of aid to the state.

Pay increases are not something the university should be worrying about at the moment, at least not President Proenza’s salary. If any pay increases are to be even considered, they should be given to the UA faculty and staff, those people who the university couldn’t easily run without.
