The Akron Zips men’s basketball team fell to Cansius 8-5 in their first game of a doubleheader between the two teams Wednesday afternoon. Both games were originally scheduled back-to-back, however the second game has been postponed due to weather.

The Zips got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first bringing in five runs on four hits. Sophomore Devon Ahart hit a double to center field bringing in fellow sophomore Matt Remielak for the runs batted in (RBI). Outfielder Joey Havrilak followed with a hit of his own, allowing Ahart to score and giving Havrilak an RBI as well. The five runs scored in the first would be Akron’s last for the game.

Akron put up a stout defense for three innings, limiting Cansius to only three hits and one run. However the Zips were not able to take advantage of this defensive stance, having only three hits the rest of
the game.

The fourth inning sealed the Zips’ fate as Cansius received five hits and six runs, with one error committed by the Zips, to take the lead. Starting pitcher Jon Pusateri was replaced by relief pitcher Zach Beaver as
well, but the switch would not be enough for the Zips to overcome Cansius College.

After the fourth inning, the Zips would continue scorelss through the end of the game, as Cansius would score two more runs, to finish the game with a score of 8-5.

The second game of the double-header was postponed by officials due to a thunder-storm that rolled in during the early evening. Zips athletics has yet to release a date for the rescheduled game.

With this loss to Cansius, the Zips fall to 6-24 on the season and 3-6 in Mid-American Conference play.

The Zips will be headed to Athens this weekend to play three games against The Ohio University Bobcats. The Bobcats are currently sitting at third place in the conference, 4-4 in conference play and 19-14 on the season overall.

The Zips will finish the month with an away game at Cansius College in Buffalo, N.Y. and three home games against the University of Buffalo.

Kent State Hardships

The Zips are not the only team in the conference to be having problems of their own, as the 2012 College World Series participant Kent State Golden Flashes have also been battling through a tough season of their own. After the tremendous 2012 season where Kent made it to the College World Series game, expectations were high for the Golden Flashes to have a repeat of last year’s successful run.

So far on the season the Golden Flashes have gone 16-13 on the season, 6-2 in conference play.

The Zips are scheduled to face the Golden Flashes May 17 and 18 for their last two games of the season.

Ball State University currently leads the conference with an undefeated record of 8-0.
