Watkins homers twice, powers Zips past Dukes

The University of Akron baseball team got the best of both worlds on Wednesday. Not only did they get the best weather this week but they also won their home opener against Duquesne University 7-4.

The Zips proved themselves, exploding offensively late in the game, with a little help from sophomore Sam Watkins who put down two home runs in the game.

I got a head in the count and I was just looking for a fastball, I just tried to keep my weight back and throw my hands at the ball and just try to not do to much with it, Watkins said.

He was only one part of the equation, which equaled a three run seventh inning, securing the win.

We did a good job, we got a big two out hit from Sam Trecaso and we had two poor at bats previous to that with bases loaded and Sam came up, which turned out to be a real big hit for us, head coach Pat Bangtson said.

We took advantage of some mistakes that they made, walks and things like that. But that’s what good teams do, you take advantage of other teams’ mistakes and then you come out with good two out hits.

On the defensive side, the pitchers ruled the mound, giving up only 11 hits.

The stand out, Scott Foster totaled the most innings for the game, going four innings and recording four strikeouts for 13 at bats.

Fastballs and sliders worked pretty good for this team, but hitters were hitting pretty good so it makes it easier to pitch when you have run support behind you, Foster said.

If we keep doing what we’re doing then we’re going to keep winning.

The Zips head to Kalamazoo, Mich. this weekend to take on Western Michigan University. The next home game will be on March 30 against Lake Erie College.
