The Zipnic was held at Buchtel field on We dnesday evening as a way to help bring community members together with students.
ASG President Jason Ziegler stated that the UA wanted to take the event to the people of the community.
The event brought out 601 people and had a mix of both students and families from the surrounding area.
Kim Conrad, an intern with Campus Focus, came to the event with her roommate, Victoria Sans, a junior biology student.
Free dinner and we live across the street, Conrad said about why they came out. Someone handed out a flyer to our house and I saw it in the house today.
While they both enjoyed the free pizza and hot dogs, they liked the idea behind the event.
Community building doesn’t happen ever, Conrad said. I think it’s a cool idea, especially with all the kids.
The event hosted tables featuring local businesses including a home security company, UAPD and child finger printing. There was also ultimate frisbee and gladiator fighting.
The event was created as a way to get the neighborhood together and many of the members expressed an interest in creating a neighborhood watch program.
Ziegler stated that this would not be the first university to create such a program. Syracuse University has implemented such a program. When asked if he believed this sort of a program would be possible here he said it was something that had to be attempted.
Ziegler said in addition to the crime watch, he has spoken to the landlord council about improving security in the houses.
The first Zipnic, held on June 4, 2009, had 350 attendees.
