The Student Union Ballroom was teeming with glitz and glamour Sunday evening as Student Fashion and Professionals United held its first spring fashion show.

Around 150 people, including LeBron James, showed up for Fashions from the Capitals, raising more than $1,000 for the University of Akron student organization and packing the house nearly to capacity.

I’m really overwhelmed, said president Rosalyn Bishop. I’ll have to say that it was a success.

James arrived fashionably late, entourage following closely behind. He was there to support friend and high school teammate Romeo Travis, who wore red ankle-length shorts and a white and red top.

It was good, James said. I really enjoyed it.

Bishop and several other local designers showcased their original ensembles on the catwalk in the hour-long extravaganza.

Although frantic backstage, the models and designers pulled it together for the show, flawlessly working the runway.

I have sewed, I have pinned, I have glued, I have spent countless hours looking through magazines and making everything perfect, designer Ronald Edwards said.

The high-energy show was kicked off with a video featuring behind the scenes pictures celebrating the hard work of the group.

Paris was the first featured fashion capital of the show. It opened with a chocolate colored Grecian gown, designed by Rosalyn Bishop and modeled by Akron’s Next Top Model winner Bianisha Tolbert.

Roz’s clothes are absolutely beautiful, said Krissy DeAngelis, ANTM runner-up. She is so gifted.

DeAngelis donned a red polka dot vintage-style dress fastened with a black belt, also designed by Bishop.

Mod vintage and urban chic were recurring themes in each collection. Vibrant colors, eclectic vinyl creations and mini-dresses dominated the runway.

I’m really proud of the stuff I have in the show because it showcases all the types of styles I like, said Gwendolyn Kisce, who had 14 outfits in the show. There are more elegant pieces and funky vinyl pieces. It’s very unique.

The show may be over, but many models and designers have big plans for the future.

I would like to pursue this as a career, said model Sierra Akhcar, who is currently awaiting a call back from America’s Next Top Model.

DeAngelis also found her calling in the modeling industry and said she would have never even dreamed of such a thing had it not been for Student Fashion and Professionals United.

I’ve got a lot of exposure, and agencies have called me, she said. It’s really helped a lot with that. DeAngelis is currently negotiating with several local modeling agencies.

Although it took a lot of hard work and sleepless nights to reach the organization’s final moment, Bishop said she was very excited for the turnout and has already started looking forward to next year’s show.

It was amazing and I can’t wait to do it again, she said.
