UA Speech Center Receives Funding for program

” Video otoscopes. Tinnitus Makers. Children’s furniture. Computer Software. The Akron Chapter of Sertoma is an international organization, similar to Kiwanis, which has existed since the 1930s.

The chapter’s motto is Service to Mankind, which they have fulfilled for many years. Akron’s chapter started in 1948, and has been donating to the University of Akron Audiology and Speech Center since the 1970s.

The chapter recently disbanded because the organization was down to only five members and there was no attraction for any newcomers to join.

We are sad we had to disband and sorry that we can no longer help the UA Audiology and Speech Center and other speech and hearing organizations. But we have raised approximately $100,000 in funding since 1948, Dr. William Brandy, former president of Sertoma, said.

Over the time of their existence, they have donated to the Speech and Hearing section of Childrens Hospital, The Haven of Rest around Christmas each year, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and in previous years bought hearing aids for individuals until it became prohibited. They were able to give this money by doing fundraising events such as golf outings and selling nuts and candy during the holidays.

In May of 2008, Sertoma donated $5,000 to the University of Akron Audiology and Speech Center, which will be divided between the Audiology and Speech Pathology departments. The donation of $5,000 was bigger than most because the chapter was ending and they needed to disperse of their funds. The Akron Chapter of Sertoma also donated $5,000 to the Childrens Hospital.

Thanks to donations like the one from Sertoma, the UA Audiology and Speech Center is able to help everyone in the Akron community as well as the University.

Students get free or reduced services, although, depending on their need, a fee may be necessary.

If students are having a tough time making payments, the center offers a sliding fee in attempt to accommodate everyone.

The UA Audiology and Speech Center also receives money from grants, scholarships, client fees and gift requests.

The University of Akron Audiology and Speech Center is a little jewel down in the Polsky Building, the Center’s Director Andrea Brewer said. Which is a wonderful facility open to all and is always welcoming new referrals.
