Steely Dan, the American jazz/rock band that consists of the two core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, performed at The Univerisity of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall both Monday, Nov. 16 and Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Their album, Aja, was performed on Monday and The Royal Scam, another one of their albums, was performed on Tuesday.

Monday night’s performance of Aja consisted of a 10-piece band, three backup soul singers and lead vocals by Donald Fagen.

The audience, which consisted of a primarily mid ’40s-’50s crowd, made it known that they were true, dedicated fans by continuously hooting and giving standing ovations to almost every song played.

The amount of energy that was expelled from both the crowd and the band could make even a person who had never heard of Steely Dan an instant fan.

With every instrument in sync and every vocal note hit precisely on cue, one could not help but sitting back in awe of the great musical talent that is Steely Dan.

A favorite played with continuous energy and enthusiasm, Reeling in the Years, which was also the encore to the set playlist of the night.

The overall show was amazing. Various colored lights and a light show that was some times syncopated to the music added funk and jazz to the overall appearance and added a jazz club vibe to the scene.

Steely Dan is the first act that I have seen at E.J. that was able to transform the music hall from the typical setting to an all-out, hip, feng-shui atmosphere.

This band that has been around for countless years is a truly talented act that even the college student can appreciate.
