Bid Day Welcomes New Members

The University of Akron’s five Panhellenic sororities gathered in Coleman Common early on Sunday, Sept. 14 to welcome home the newest members of their sororities. Bid Day is the day potential new members receive their bid to join a chapter.

Bid Day follows a weeklong formal recruitment process where the potential members learn about each chapter as well as meet the sorority women. Through an intensive selection process, over 100 undergraduate women received bids to their favorite chapters.

After eagerly meeting their new sorority sisters, the new members spent the afternoon playing outside games, enjoying lunch and getting to know their new sisters at the chapter’s home.

“According to our records, this has been the most successful recruitment we have ever had,” Vice President of Membership for Panhellenic Council, Laura Clark said.

The success of this year’s recruitment resulted in the growth of UA’s greek life.  This increase has change the Panhellenic house totals from 67 members to 78 members. The house total is the number of women sororities need in their chapter in order to be in good standings with Panhellenic Council.

In addition to each chapter welcoming home more than 20 new members on Bid Day, they also welcomed back their Rho Gammas. Rho Gammas are sorority women who disaffiliate from their chapter throughout the formal recruitment process in order to help new members from an unbiased perspective. The Rho Gammas were just as excited as the new members to be apart of their chapters again.

These newest additions will spend the next few months learning about their respective chapters. Their chapter’s history, standards and traditions will soon become natural to these women. By the end of fall semester, each new member will become an active and initiated member in the greek life community.

“I’m looking forward to experiencing sisterhood with the best chapter on campus,” freshman and new member of Alpha Delta Pi, Stephanie Weber said.

Bid Day is the beginning of life long friendships. The entire recruitment process creates memories that will stay with the sorority women throughout their entire college experience.
