Good Neighbors Inc. answers questions to an aspiring volunteer

ServeAkron held its semesterly volunteer fair on Wednesday, Sept. 24 exhibiting the volunteer options available to students. The second floor of the Student Union was filled with 11 different agencies in which students can volunteer through ServeAkron.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., students could talk to all of the different agencies and find out which volunteering options were best for them. Agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, Autism Speaks, Summit County Historical Society and many more had booths open where students could talk to organization leaders about what each agency had to offer.

Through ServeAkron, students can RSVP to these volunteering events with these organizations that are usually a part of their Super Service Saturday. These events can attract about 20 volunteers each month. But their Make a Difference Day can have about 700 volunteers in attendance. This year’s Make a Difference Day is on Oct. 25 and with two different two-hour time slots in which students have the option to volunteer.

ServeAkron also has events that can be attended with no RSVP necessary. “We will be holding a drop-in event this Friday at the Starbucks. We’ll be making fleece ties end blankets to give to a local homeless shelter,” said ServeAkron organizer Heather Saling.

Since they had so many companies reach out to ServeAkron, they had to create another Volunteer Fair on Oct. 1. At that event they will have 12 more agencies attending, giving students even more options of what they can volunteer at.

ServeAkron has a full list of their volunteering events online at uakron.edu/studentlife/serve. Students can register for events there as well, or email [email protected].
