Women's soccer set for weekend homestand

“After being on the road for the last two weeks the University of Akron Women’s soccer team will be at home playing the Miami University Redhawks (7-5-1) on Friday and on Sunday the Zips will take on the Ball State Cardinals (4-9-0). After being on the road for the last two weeks the University of Akron Women’s soccer team will be at home playing the Miami University Redhawks (7-5-1) on Friday and on Sunday the Zips will take on the Ball State Cardinals (4-9-0).

It has been a long two weekends for us, but I give our team a lot of credit, Zips head coach Chris Pfau said. We have shown up in every game and played hard and been in every game, we have not used it as an excuse, it will be nice to be at home and to celebrate our seniors during Sunday’s game.

The Redhawks are currently fifth in the MAC conference (3-2-1 in conference play) and are currently three spots ahead of the Zips (2-3-1 in conference play) in MAC conference standings.

We played Central really tough at home and they are undefeated, I really believe if we go out and play to win we are a tough team to play against, Pfau said.

Key players to watch out for on the Redhawks are Sara Lund and Allison Berkey who lead the team with four goals a piece. Kersta Carlson leads the Redhawks with six assists. Jodi Zwinelberg has 23 shots for the Redhawks.

Redhawks goaltender Krista Pace has started all 13 games and has 65 saves for the season.

Team stats for the Redhawks are 20 goals, 15 assists, 55 points, and 168 shots.

On Sunday the Zips will take on the Ball State Cardinals (2-4-0 in conference) and are currently ranked tenth in the conference.

One of the key players to watch out for on the Cardinals is Megan Ridley who leads the team with four goals. Jackie Eft leads the team in assists with five, and leading the team in shots is Missy Gordon with 39.

Team stats of the Cardinals are 17 goals, 18 assists, 52 points, and 162 shots for the season.

The Zips are hoping to come out of this weekend with a couple of wins and to compete for the MAC title.

The same thing we have stressed, play our game, go out to win and good things will happen, Pfau said.

The key players for the Zips this season are Rachel Phillip who leads the team with three goals, Britini Back and Alysia Virkler who leads the team with two assists each. Rachel Phillip and Britini Back lead the Zips in shots with 28 a piece.

Goaltending for the Zips is Jeny Wolbert who has 53 saves for the season.

Wolbert has played extremely well since the game against Kentucky and I think her dominating that game has given her a lot of confidence and she deserves a lot of the credit for our season, Pfau said.

The Zips are still competing for the MAC championship this season and they have five games to go.

We are playing some very good soccer, and If we can get someone that will take it upon themselves to score, we can win games, Pfau said.

Friday night’s game against the Redhawks will be YMCA day.
