The University of Akron’s student Opera Lyric Theater workshop ensemble presents a series of flash mobs on campus to display their musical talents and abilities this month at Starbucks in the Student Union.

The Akron ensemble is performing flash mob-style opera for students to watch and enjoy as they pass through the center of campus.

The production is directed by Professor Frank Ward, who views the flash mobs as an opportunity for students to present their skills and talents for an audience outside the classroom.

“It is often a lonely process, with students [held] in a small practice room learning and preparing the music in order to give an artistic presentation,” Ward said. “The flash mobs offer the opportunity for the students to present their music, literally among the people, and hopefully give them a pleasant surprise for the moment.”

In preparation for each performance, the students dedicate hours each week practicing their talents.

There are three more opportunities to catch performances including Thursday, Nov. 13, Tuesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 20. Each performance takes place at 12:15 p.m.

The Opera/Lyric Theater invites students to stop by one of the flash mob events to observe a demonstration of the hard work they put into enhancing their live performances and vocal abilities. The students utilize the flash mobs as well for practice in front of crowds and advertisement for their upcoming theater program on Friday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. in Guzzetta Recital Hall.
