It seems as if UA will not be merging with CSU or NEOUCOM. Well, that is to say, UA isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

We need not lose our institutional name and we will not, Proenza said Monday in his State of the University address.

However, it seems that instead of merging with other universities in Ohio, the plan is to become a super university without them.

Proenza declared that UA should be designated the public university for northeast Ohio.

We think it’s a good thing that we aren’t losing the University of Akron name, or moving out of Akron. We’re also glad that Proenza said that UA can and should work with other universities.

The idea of designating the university as the public university for Northeast Ohio is kind of silly, though.

Kind of sounds like we’re trying to be The Ohio State University.

While that’s working for them, maybe UA should try something new.

Like getting Akron renamed as Roo Town. It might be a long process, getting the name of the city changed on maps, atlases, Google and birth certificates.

But it would be worth it, right? It’s doubtful that the university will be able to be come the public university for northeast Ohio without taking over the city of Akron as well as other universities in our area.

So we think Proenza should run for mayor.

President of the university, Mayor of RooTown, leader of this new and exciting place that is UA.

In all honesty, we’re excited about the future of UA. The new campaign that Proenza discussed Monday involved three principles-to aspire, attain and advance.

It’s a big campaign, with a goal of $500 million, and it’s a good one. It will allow the university to do nothing but grow as it advances into the future.

Seriously though, we might as well rename Akron RooTown. It’s got a better ring to it.
