Softball splits with Youngstown State

Softball ends series in a stand still

Tuesday, April 14, the Zips softball team went out of conference to play the Penguins of Youngstown State.

The two game series resulted in each team adding a victory to their overall record.

In the first game, the Zips won 3-1. This come from behind win developed as YSU scored their single run in the first inning. The defense of YSU kept the Zips at bay until the third inning where Caitlin Gambone finally scored for the Zips. Akron’s other two scorers were Alyssa Nicholas and Savannah Fruin.

At bat, the Zips had eight hits to YSU’s four and also had a better batting average of .286 while the penguins had an average of .160. Fruin had the best at the plate recording hits on two of her three at bats. Erin Seiler once again threw a great game by allowing four hits and one run while also striking out 13 of the 27 batters she faced during the game.

During the second game, YSU kept their lead intact. They scored first again and continued their scoring throughout the game including a three run inning in the fifth. Akron had Sara Pearson pitching for the game as she ended the game with eight hits and six runs while also walking six batters.

On the offensive side, Akron was outhit 8-5 and had a batting average of .192. Chelsea Wildey finished the game .500 at the plate as well as tailing three RBIs in the game. Taylor Kirian (2 runs) and Cassie Gillespie scored the three runs by UA. The final score of the second match ended with a score of 6-3 in favor of the YSU.

Akron will have a busy weekend schedule as they are on the road for two MAC conference games. The first series will be against the Toledo Rockets (15-24, 2-8) and will look to continue their winning streak as they get set to host UA for a doubleheader on Friday, April 17. The other series will take place Saturday April 18 and Sunday, April 19 as the Zips travel from Toledo to Bowling Green (13-20, 4-6).
