He’s been on the scene for years, but only die-hard fans of old-school stand-up would recognize his name.
It wasn’t until 2004 that Judd Apatow got the first bit of public recognition.
It wasn’t until 2005 that he became a household name.
But this past year, Mr. Apatow has shown Hollywood how to make movies legendary.
You may recognize his wife, Leslie Mann. She is frequently cast in his movies with Paul Rudd and Jonah Hill.
Married since June of 1997, Mann and Apatow share their home with their two children.
In a recent interview on Conan O’Brien, Mann stated that she and Judd sleep in separate bedrooms, compliments of Apatow’s incessant and rather deafening snoring.
Even though he idolizes Steve Martin in the comedy realm, Apatow, while accepting his Film Critic Award for The 40 Year-Old Virgin, stated that he learned everything he knows about writing from Garry Shandling.
The man’s been nominated for and won numerous awards, though did not earn recognition of the Golden Globes until this past year with Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
While praised by critics, the film didn’t seem to have the star power to draw audiences into the theaters to see it.
Cox ended up goin’ limp on arrival.
In 2004, he teamed up with Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd to bring us a whole new hilarious take on the nightly news with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
The next year saw Apatow back with Rudd in Steve Carrell’s breakthrough hit The 40 Year Old Virgin.
In 2006, Apatow jumped into the driver’s seat with an encore partnership with Ferrell in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
But 2007 saw two of the summers top grossing films and critically acclaimed comedies of the year with Knocked Up and Superbad.
This year seems to be shaping up to be no different, but that is definitely not a bad thing.
Apatow hits up the island paradise of Oahu to bring us Forgetting Sarah Marshall, due out this Friday.
After Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) loses his long-time girlfriend television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell) to a ludicrous British rocker Aldous (Russell Brand), Bretter seeks safe haven in the islands, only to find the new happy couple is vacationing there as well.
Bretter feels his life may be over without her, but finds solace in the eyes of Rachel (Mila Kunis).
Through innocent flirtations and a no-pressure method of letting go of the worries of life, Rachel lures Peter to rejoin the human race, with the help of more alcohol than we’d find in Madam Clinton’s minibar.
Apatow’s poster children Jonah Hill and Rudd co-star in this hilarious comedy of broken hearts and those who are sent to mend them.
Being raved as the best comedy of the year and an instant classic, looks like Apatow struck gold once again.
Guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and drop your jaw to the floor in utter shock, check out Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it opens everywhere tomorrow.
