Women’s Tennis

The Zips women’s tennis team is home this weekend to host its own Akron Invitational at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow. All play is round-robin. No team scores will be kept.

Action starts on Friday at 9 a.m. with singles matches between Cornell and West Virginia. Doubles action begins at noon with the Big Red taking on the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), while Akron faces the Mountaineers. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts UMKC in singles action.

Play will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. with UMKC facing West Virginia in singles. Doubles begin at noon featuring Cornell against West Virginia, and Akron playing UMKC. At 1 p.m., Akron hosts Cornell in singles action.

Finally on Sunday, Cornell and UMKC square off in singles at 9 a.m. In doubles action at noon, West Virginia faces UMKC, while the Zips play Cornell. The tournament concludes with singles play between Akron and West Virginia, beginning at 1 p.m.

“This weekend we will be severely tested, once again, by three strong teams,” head coach Brandon Padgett said.

Padgett also added, “Success is not given, it is earned, and I am looking to see how hard we are willing to work toward our specific goals,” Padgett concluded. “Success is also not always determined by wins and losses, but by consistent effort and determination.”

Women’s Volleyball

The University of Akron’s volleyball team takes to the road this weekend in MAC action.

The Zips (1-1 MAC, 7-8 overall) travel to Bowling Green on Friday to take on the Falcons (0-2, 4-11) and then head south to Oxford, Ohio to battle the RedHawks of Miami of Ohio (1-1, 9-6).

Last weekend, the volleyball team split matches against Buffalo (win) and Ball State (loss).

Amanda Bedell is currently fourth in the MAC in hitting percentage, sixth in kills, and seventh in points. Kelsie Wilson is eighth in hitting percentage and Karley Kusan is tenth in assists.

Akron leads the MAC as a team in service aces, while individually Dragana Micic (first), Wilson (second), and Callie Mack (fifth) all are in the top ten.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team also hits the road this weekend with two matches within the MAC.

Friday, the Zips (1-1 MAC, 4-5-1 overall) head west to take on the Falcons of Bowling Green (0-2, 4-5-1) before continuing on to Eastern Michigan to share the pitch with the Eagles (0-2, 3-6-1).

Akron’s Sarah Sivic (third in MAC scoring) and Katie George (eighth) pace the offense, while Rachel Baughman is tied for fifth in the conference with her three assists.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country

Both of the University of Akron’s cross country teams will be competing in the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio this Friday.

Cedarville University expects that approximately 53 teams will compete in this race for the men and women.

Rifle

The Rifle team heads to Annapolis, Maryland to take on Navy this Saturday.
