Students all over campus came together yesterday for Diversity Fest at the Student Union Piano Lounge to learn about student organization on campus that promote diversity. This event allows each club to educate students on who and what they are in hope to recruit new members.

The event was put on by Harwinder Nagra, the diversity chair of the Zips Programming Network, and was part of Diversity Week at The University of Akron.

At this event, students not only learned about diversity, but decorated cupcakes. At each organization’s table was a different topping for students to add to their cupcake. While decorating their cupcakes, they were able to learn about a new organization.

During the event, students got tickets at each table to place in a raffle for a Chipotle, Starbucks, Taco Bell, or iTunes gift cards.

Here are some of the organizations that were at the event:

    • Student 2 Students Global Exchange connects international students with American students so they can get accustomed to studying at UA. Its event called “Global Oneness” will be held in the Union this Monday, Oct. 3 between 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., wherein speaker Ratanjit S. Sondhe will talk about peace and prosperity.
    • The African American Brotherhood is an international organization that promotes the retention and graduation of African American males.
    • The LGBTU organization is Akron’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Union that seeks to provide an educational environment where these students are supported.
    • Akron’s Study Abroad Society is composed of students who have studied abroad or would like to in the future. They are hosting a Dine to Donate event at Pizza Fire this Tuesday to raise money for their organization.
    • Counseling and Testing Center
    • The Office of Accessibility and Medina and Summit County Rape Crisis Center

Every table presented a fun and informative atmosphere for students to learn about the diversity of student organizations and get in touch with university programs that are always there to help out students in need.
