Phi Gamma Delta parties with puppies

On Friday, Oct. 28, 261 Spicer Street will be an animal house.

Here, just behind the Student Wellness and Recreation Center, is where the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta will celebrate “The Puppy Party” to raise awareness about animal adoption and raise money that will go directly to a local animal shelter, One of a Kind Pet Rescue.

From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., puppies from Pet Rescue shelter will be ready for action. Students and their guests (bring the family!) can spend an afternoon playing, tumbling, or cuddling with puppies for only $5 a ticket. While having fun in the puppy pen, attendees can have their picture taken with their favorite dog.

Staff from the rescue center will also be present to answer questions about adopting a pet and give information about volunteering with One of a Kind.

“The Puppy Party” is not just about the puppies. Although they aren’t as soft and cuddly, pumpkins will be available for $4 dollars each. Purchased pumpkins can be carved on-site and entered into the pumpkin-carving contest.

Rolling around with energetic puppies is hungry work. In keeping with the season and providing that needed boost, pumpkin spice lattés and fresh chocolate chip cookies can be enjoyed for $1 each.

As mentioned, all the proceeds collected at “The Puppy Party” will benefit One of a Kind Pet Rescue. However, the adoption center, located at 1929 West Market Street, specializes in more than just puppies. The website, oneofakindpets.com/site/, lists all types of animals available for adoption from the usual cats and dogs, to horses and turtles, and, seemingly, everything in between.

Almost all of the animals are rescued from euthanasia. They are all spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and given a medical exam to check for any diseases. The funds from PGD’s event will help with the cost of this process, keeping adoption fees affordable, and the volunteer program.

Phi Gamma Delta, locally founded in 1986, promotes “service” as one of the five key values of the organization. Nathan Palella, PGD member and point person for “The Puppy Party,” states that the fraternity organizes philanthropic events for national agencies every semester, but this event is the first ever of its kind for Phi Gam. “The change of pace of giving back to the community has us excited and we hope to make this an annual event hereafter.”
