The University of Akron will be holding an Etiquette Lunch on Friday, Nov. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Taber Student Union Ballroom for students to meet with potential employers and learn more about professional careers.

The event costs $5 and registration is required through Handshake. Business appropriate attire is recommended for those planning to attend the lunch.

According to the UA events webpage, this event will give students the “opportunity to learn proper networking and dining etiquette while engaging with employers…” along with a three-course lunch.

Also, students will be able to have their headshot photo taken for LinkedIn, a fashion show about various types of attire for careers and a presentation about different topics related to business and professional conduct.

The meal will start with a salad, following a chicken entrée, and an optional dessert of chocolate lava cake or cheesecake. Any student with dietary restrictions should contact Career Services when registering for accommodations. Gluten-free and vegetarian options available.

Danielle Pariano, Assistant Director of Career Services, said that future employers enjoy when students show their knowledge of communication skills and have researched the company.

Several potential employers will be attending the Etiquette Lunch this year, including Accelerated Analytics LLC, National Interstate Insurance, Vector Marketing and many more, according to Handshake.

Pariano said it is important for students to plan and practice the things they will say to employers before the event, while also having an “elevator pitch” ready for employers.

“Your elevator pitch should include your name, year school, major, what made you interested in the field and any relevant experience you have,” Pariano said.

Suit jackets can be borrowed for free from the Career Closet, Room 211 in the Student Union, according to Pariano.

Students should attend the Etiquette Lunch because of all the information and resources for future careers it has to offer, Pariano said.

“Career Services has so many resources for students that help them grow and gain valuable skills sets,” Pariano said. “I enjoy educating students on their options and helping them access opportunities.”
