Though the sky was cloudy and threatened rain, 400 plus students still flowed in and out of the Rock the Roo concert.
Rock the Roo is a free concert series conveniently located outside of E.J. Thomas Hall. Free T-shirts, tickets to upcoming events and free lunch are used to attract students and staff to come out and enjoy some of the local musicians in the Akron area.
Throughout campus one could hear the soulful melodies of performing artist Valerie Custer.
Custer was a solo act, as she sang and played her acoustic guitar. She performed some of her own songs and many modern day hits such as Rihanna’s Umbrella, The Plain White T’s Hey There Delilah and Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here.
A staff member organizing the events said, we were expecting around 100 to 400 students to come down, and they (the students) blew away our expectations, Joni Shelton a second year graduate student and second time Rock the Roo attendee said.
It’s a nice break for the students between classes … the performer (Custer) is really good, and I plan on coming back next year.
She (Custer) really captures her audience and plays to their mood; it’s amazing what she can do with such a diverse audience, freshman Sarah Pileggi said. This is great, exclaimed third year graduate student Toussaint English.
I’ve never been to a Rock the Roo event and I totally missed out. I mean they give you free T-shirts, free food and free tickets to upcoming events. How could you go wrong?
When asked about Valerie Custer he proclaimed, I love her, she is an awesome performer, I wasn’t expecting much from a free concert but she made this worth my while. I’m definitely coming back next year.

The Rock the Roo free concert series continues throughout the month with shows Oct. 10 and 17.
