How to veg out in Akron

“To stay current with this country’s green movement, more people are eating less meat to live a healthier lifestyle. Fortunately for Akron, Chrissie Hynde is opening an all-vegetarian restaurant called VegiTerranean.

Though Akron has never had a completely vegetarian restaurant, both non-meat eaters and students who are just trying to cut back their intake have numerous opportunities close to campus to enjoy less meat.

A favorite restaurant among most University of Akron students is Chipotle, located in Highland Square, Fairlawn and Chapel Hill.

Chipotle serves a vegetarian burrito or bowl, which comes with onions and green peppers, as well as guacamole, which normally costs extra for meals with meat.

Chipotle is a close and inexpensive option for those who don’t want to eat meat.

Another local restaurant with a substantial vegetarian menu is Aladdin’s, located in Highland Square.

Aladdin’s offers a variety of fresh, affordable and meatless Mediterranean-inspired foods.

It devotes one section of their menu to vegetarian food, and they have a vegetarian combo with five different meatless dishes.

If you’re not hungry enough for a meal, smoothies are a good meal replacer. Aladdin’s serves an array of smoothies and juices; from blended milk smoothies to freshly-squeezed carrot juice.

Another place for a meatless alternative to food is Robeks, located on W. Market Street near Hawkins Street.

Robek’s serves made-to-order fruit smoothies, with exotic options like acai, a berry from the Amazon and consists of a near-perfect amount of amino acids.

They now offer an assortment of all-natural, 100-percent fruit juice smoothies, making it an extremely healthy meal replacer.

Mustard Seed Market and Cafe, located in Fairlawn, is Ohio’s largest locally owned natural and organic restaurant.

Some of the dishes include vegetable and tofu napoleon, vegetarian beach enchilada and a tempeh reuben – a type of fermented soybean.

The cafe also serves various vegan (animal-product free) dishes. One of the most convenient aspects of the Mustard Seed is the single-serving vegetarian and vegan meals, side dishes and desserts they sell.

The Mustard Seed offers a grocery store stocked with natural produce, non-perishables, body products, and other essentials that are certified organic by the USDA.

Aside from all of these meat-free menu options, some restaurants make it difficult to find a meatless entree.

Most restaurants, however, would be happy to exclude the meat and add extra vegetables. It’s just a matter of asking your server.

So if you want to live a healthier lifestyle, try ordering a meat-free dinner the next time you’re out.
