This past Sunday at 4:10 p.m., a student was walking down Vine Street near the athletics field house, minding his own business.

Then he was robbed at gunpoint by two men who took off in a Honda Accord.

Today the university notified its students in a timely and appropriate manner, utilizing the Special Edition Zipmail in a way that even we approve of.

There were also five vehicles reported stolen over the weekend, and the Zipmail informed us that three of the vehicles had been recovered.

It seems that the Akron and university Police Departments did their job well this weekend, even spotting suspects fitting the description of the Sunday evening mugging and chasing them down. They got away, but ditched their car near Route 8.

We’d like to thank the university Police and APD for doing their jobs well this weekend. We’d like to extend our thanks to the university as well, who notified us about the mugging on Vine Street the morning after it happened.

We’ve railed against the university for not notifying students of crime around campus, so we have to thank them when they do it.

But we’ve still got questions. What tangible measures are being taken to increase safety on campus? We can increase patrols and send out Zipmails, but we’ve still got students being robbed at gunpoint on Vine Street.

That’s on campus. On a Sunday afternoon. This wasn’t late at night, or after dark. It was 4:10 p.m. Are we ever going to feel safe again as we walk around campus?

We hope. But it might not happen until the whole area surrounding campus is rejuvenated. That won’t be for a few years.

So if you plan on continuing your studies at UA, plan on getting mugged. The university (hopefully) will notify you in a timely manner and the police will do a good job after the crime has occured.

Unfortunately, though, there won’t be anybody standing between you and the guy with the gun.

Just try to get the license plate number of his Honda.
