The Associated Student Government is hosting upcoming events that allow students to become involved in campus politics and learn more about the organization.

Thursday at 5 p.m., the State of the ASG/ASG Open House will be held in the Starbucks lounge in the Student Union. This free event allows interested students to meet current members of ASG. Cookies and snacks will be provided.

A presidential debate between the candidates will be held in the Starbucks lounge March 8 at 6 p.m. This event is also free and will include food and drinks.

Voting on positions within ASG begins online March 8 at 8 p.m. and ends March 11 at noon. There will also be voting tables around campus throughout election week. Results will be announced March 11 at 5 p.m. in Student Union room 316.

ASG is the voice of the student body President Jason Ziegler said.

Ziegler, a senior in construction engineering technology, has been in ASG since his freshman year when he was elected freshman senator.

The organization serves many functions including recognizing and allocating funds to student organizations, passing legislature, and hearing concerns of undergraduates.

Once an item of concern has been brought to the attention of ASG members, we’ll do the research and work with the administration to try to make changes, Ziegler said.

Although he has always followed politics fairly closely, Ziegler never became actively involved until college.

I was living in Gallucci Hall as a freshman. One day, I e-mailed Dr. Proenza about some parking problems and how the Wi-Fi wasn’t working. He called me, we talked and he sent people to fix the problem, Ziegler said. Later, I saw a poster to run for freshman senator.

Students interested in joining the organization can stop in the ASG office in Student Union room 133, or go directly to the Web site to submit an online application form.

There are requirements for continued membership such as a 2.3 GPA for elected and appointed members, and a 2.0 GPA for general members. The full list of requirements can be viewed on the Web site.

Ziegler is glad he joined ASG as it has exposed him to things that many other students won’t be.

Plus, it looks great on a resume, Ziegler said.

Even better? Certain members get paid for their services.

Students who serve as senators, president, vice president, senate chair and chief justice receive a stipend that is based off tuition.

Other employees who are members of the cabinet receive minimum wage.

With the job market becoming increasingly competitive, ASG can also help distinguish certain candidates from others.

Ziegler has some final words for those who are still uncertain if ASG is right for them.

Do it. We are a real governing body, and contribute to the decision making process. Leadership is big in the job market, and ASG is a great leadership opportunity.
