Whoever claims that you can’t get a classy meal on a college budget has never been to Otani Steakhouse. Located a mere ten minutes from campus at 1684 Merriman Road, Otani’s offers many budget-friendly meals. Waiting on that next paycheck, yet really wanting some good food? Otani’s accepts all major credit cards. They have lunch hours from 11 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. and their dinner starts at 5 p.m., seating the last people at 9p.m. Their lunch menu is a little cheaper, for those of us on a budget; however, make sure you set about two hours aside for this dining experience.
For those of age, Otani’s also has a fully stocked bar, with reasonably priced drinks. For the rest, they have a variety of fountain drinks, iced tea and shirley temples. When it comes time to order the entrees include choices from chicken, steak, seafood, pork, and even a vegetarian option–starting from about $10 going up to around $20.
If you have an entertainment card, or coupons out of the book, you can enjoy your dinner at buy one, get one free. All meals start off with authentic mushroom soup accompanied by a salad with orange dressing. Following salad, the chef comes out and grills up shrimp flambé for everyone at the table. Along with the shrimp, they serve grilled mushrooms, onions, and zucchini. Then, your food is prepared and cooked in front of you. During the meal preparation, the chef keeps you entertained by tossing food, making volcanoes out of an onion, and putting your food into shapes. After preparing the entrée, the chef fries up rice to go along with your food. Although you are tempted to eat a lot of your food by this point, the recommendation is waiting. The rice completes the meal. The meal is concluded with a dish of orange sherbet and a fortune cookie.
Not looking for a Japanese feast? There is always the sushi bar. With a few different options to choose from, anybody can find something they would find tasty here.
There were a few cons, however, to dining at Otanis. First is the service. The servers are a little slow, whenever you need refills you have to ask, and if you get anything to drink besides water, you have to pay for refills. When you go with a small group of people, you may have to be seated with strangers. The tables are set for groups of eight, so when they are busy, they will not let you sit alone. They invite whoever comes in after you to join you at your table. This is an easy fix though, just make sure you go with a group of eight. There are smaller tables for a more intimate experience, but they do not cook the food in front of you. Aside from those few things, it is a high suggestion from customers that you take your parents entertainment card and try this place out.
