Last September, a woman going by the pseudonym Natalie Dylan put her virginity up for sale on Bunnyranch.com. She says she is doing it to get money for college. So, instead of getting a job like the average college students, she decided to sell her virginity online.

Dylan received over 10,000 bids ranging from $1 million to $3.8 million. Since there is no return policy on this type of sale Dylan had a medical exam to prove that she is indeed a virgin and took a lie detector test to prove that whoever pays will in fact, buy her virginity. The man in the lead to receive her virginity is a 39 year-old Austrian business man with a bid of $2.6 million.

Dylan claims that it was college that changed her view of the value of virginity. Like most girls, I was raised to believe that virginity is a sacred gift a woman should reserve for just the right man. But college taught me this concept is just a tool to keep the status quo intact.

That must have been some course, but her reasons seem like she is just trying to justify actions. Women have been moving out of her so called status quo for some time now. Remember the women that worked for and achieving women’s suffrage in 1920? Remember Hilary Clinton running for President? Virginity has nothing to do with the advance of women’s status in society. If anything, auctioning off one’s virginity is regressing the work women have done to achieve equality.

What’s ironic about this situation is that Dylan has a degree in Women’s Studies. She wants to get her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. Its seems funny that a girl that is willing to sell her virginity online wants to counsel married couples.

Some have praised her for her new form of capitalism. While it is her body and she can do what she wants with it, do not confuse a form of legal prostitution with entrepreneurship. What she is doing, while surprising and controversial, is not unique or clever. Other girls have done this before. The first report of this was in 2001. In that incident the bidder didn’t honor his bid and it the arrangement fell through. In 2004 a girl from the University of Bristol sold her virginity to pay for her school debts. She described the experience as horrible.

While her decision to sell her virginity will make her a large amount of money it should not be praised as business savvy. Dylan may claim that she doesn’t view her virginity as sacred, but she doesn’t seem to realize the possible consequences.
