Letter to the Editor

“I read with interest Mr. Campbell’s opinion column on Tues., April 16, concerning the gun policies at The University of Akron. Does he really think it would be safer for everyone on the campus to carry a concealed weapon? We are talking possibly thousands of guns on the campus in a single day.”

I read with interest Mr. Campbell’s opinion column on Tues., April 16, concerning the gun policies at The University of Akron. Does he really think it would be safer for everyone on the campus to carry a concealed weapon? We are talking possibly thousands of guns on the campus in a single day. That thought is very disturbing to me, and should be to other people on campus. There are other avenues to follow when it comes to protection on campus. Apparently, Mr. Campbell has no knowledge of the program offered by the University Police on how to react and ward off possible attacks. The program is called the ALICE Plan. ALICE stands for: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Sergeant Chad Cunningham from the UAPD has taught this to many people on campus. We were taught the ALICE Plan, and I found it to be very helpful and well prepared for whatever could happen. I suggest that Mr. Campbell and anyone else that wants to feel comfortable on this campus without carrying a gun call Sergeant Cunningham at UAPD at 330-972-2911.
