Browns draft sexy in a smart way

“This year’s draft was about as fun to watch as Dick Cheney’s torture tapes for a Browns fan. Three trades, no big names. But Mangini crafted a good, courageous draft for an underrated coach in his first year with a new team. No Quinns or Thomases or Braylon trades or anything more exciting than trading down.”

This year’s draft was about as fun to watch as Dick Cheney’s torture tapes for a Browns fan. Three trades, no big names.

But Mangini crafted a good, courageous draft for an underrated coach in his first year with a new team.

No Quinns or Thomases or Braylon trades or anything more exciting than trading down.

We drafted smart players that fit head coach Eric Mangini’s plan for his era instead of big names (and their big contracts).

Remind you of the Patriots?

Mangini picked smart players, too.

Alex Mack, the Browns’ already-maligned first pick (21st overall), won the Draddy Trophy, college football’s top scholar-athlete. When he visited Cleveland before the draft, the coaching staff unconventionally tested Mack on his memory and football IQ.

Brian Robiskie, a Chagrin Falls product and sure-handed Buckeye, was a runner up for the Draddy. He graduated in the top 2 percent of OSU’s business school.

Mohamed Massaquoi, a wide receiver, earned a psychology degree from Georgia. Cornerback Don Carey turned down a scholarship from Yale.

Mangini does not have much time to implement his game plan, and slow players slow down the process.

It’s going to be a few years until we find the promised land, but we’re off to a good start.
