Ah, summer break is just about here.
We all simply have to make it through finals week, which is obviously easier said than done.
Everything seems to be going well, aside from the lack of summer jobs available.
Last week/weekend was simply beautiful outside, the birds are chirping and the flowers have bloomed.
Whether you’re staying in Akron or going home, summer is guaranteed to be great, at least compared to those cold wintery days.
If you’re not going to a far-away tropical destination this summer, no worries. There are other nearby Ohio locations that, with the warm weather, can give the effect of a vacation.
What should be known as the official windy city, Cleveland, is conveniently located by one of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie.
Lake Erie offers various beaches to lay out at, fish at or even cook-out on.
A beach located here, that offers all of the previous things plus nature reserves is called the Headlands Beach State Park.
The nature reserves on this beach include some of the last, most amazing examples of Lake Erie’s fine dune and beach communities.
This preserved dune area holds some of the most rare plant species in the Northeast Ohio area including Canada wild-rye and wafer-ash.
These dunes are available to the public during hours of daylight.
If you’re wanting to keep it local in Akron, there are tons of great Metro parks and trails to bike and hike on all throughout the city and the outskirts.
The Valley is the location for many State parks, hiking trails and paths.
Sand Run Metro Park runs into Merriman Road off of W. Market Street and offers a great jogging trail and even a soccer field.
Swimming is also available in the Metro Parks in Munroe Falls and Silver Creek.
This area also provides canoeing, paddle-boating and rafts that all can be rented for a certain price.
Both areas are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Daily admission for this Metro Park is $4 for adults and teens.
Season passes are also available and you can save up to $5 on a season pass if you buy it before the season begins.
More information about the above parks and more can be found at summitmetroparks.org and ohio.com.
