John Case, vice president of finance and admistration, was charged with driving under the influence last week. He has been granted a paid 10 month administrative leave.

Case was arrested Sept. 3 on Interstate 271 in Macedonia after a caller informed the police that he was driving erratically through a construction zone.

While he declined to take a blood alcohol test, he will face a preliminary hearing Oct. 3 on two charges, an OVI, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and not driving in marked lanes.

It’s not good to be in that position and get a DUI. That’s not really giving all these students a good example, said early childhood education major Rachel Pedleuy.

According to Laura Massie, UA spokeswoman, the recommendation to relieve Case of his duties came from President Luis Proenza.
Case has been relieved of his CFO responsibilities, and he will retain his title and pay until his contract expires in June, Massie said in a statement released to the internal campus community. In this interim period, the president will assign Case daily, full-time responsibilities.

We have not designated an interim person and will be examining that possibility or distributing his duties among key personnel in the next few days, Proenza told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Some students are having a hard time understanding why Case was relieved of his duties but is still collecting his full salary.

I don’t agree with that. He should have to suffer the consequences like anyone else would,Orlando Scott, an international business student, said.

Other students expressed their hesitations in coming to a conclusion about the matter.

I don’t know how important he is to the school. I think there’s a lot more to the story than what’s been released by the Akron Beacon Journal, said psychology major Jack Hinneberg, junior.

The Akron Becon Journal reported that Case was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol three months after being hired by UA in 2006. Shaker Heights police said they found him slumped over the steering wheel of his car.
