As InfoCision Stadium Summa Field opened its doors to the public for the first time, passer-bys could hear those around singing its praises.

It’s awesome, Megan Knight, a senior middle level education student said. Walking across campus there was so much more school spirit.

She said that games at the Rubber Bowl never attracted as much school spirit as she saw that day.

The nearly sold out crowd of about 28,000 people brought their spirit and more to the game as UA Board of trustees chair Philip Kaufmann welcomed those in attendance to the field, while City of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic joined the opening.

This is a place where Akronites can enjoy their city, he said.

UA President Luis Proenza kept his words short, simply asking the crowd to repeat after him yelling, Thank you Akron followed by Go Zips.

While the trustees walked on to the field, Zippy found a more creative mode of transportation by arriving on the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

He was followed by parachuters who brought the American flag.

As the Zips got underway with the first kick-off in the stadium students could be seen beating on anything that made noise from the padding surrounding the field to the bleachers.

Students from other universities attended. Sarah Highman, a Malone University alumna attended the game with her husband who attends UA.

She said that she had never been to a University of Akron football game.

The lines for the concession stands took up most of the width of the hallways on both sides of the stadium.

Christopher Selle, a civil engineering student liked something different about the stadium.

It’s nice how they angled the stairs so it’s extra loud on the field, he said.

While he went to Zips games growing up, he has high hopes for the new field.

Hopefully it will bring a lot more student athletes to UA, Selle said.

He also said he hopes the field being on campus will get more students to the games.

While the crowds dwindled as the second half got underway many students like Luke Nelson stuck around to enjoy the new stadium.

He said he loved InfoCision Stadium and made mention of its design.

There is a lot of space and it’s not crowded, he said referring to the openness of the field.

One hope everyone had in common was that of boosting school spirit and student attendance at the games.
