The Zips play this weekend can be explained in one style of play, defense, defense and defense.

There is only one phrase to explain how the Zips played Friday night’s game against Eastern Michigan Eagles that ended in double overtime, lights out.

It’s good, still settling at times, we need to be more aggressive in the box, Zips head coach Chris Pfau said.

It was lights out from the time the game started to the end of the second overtime.

Eastern Michigan, who was (4-2-2) before the game started, brought their game by being very aggressive but it was not enough to bring home the victory.

Leading the game for the Zips was none other than the six foot goaltender Jeny Wolbert.

Wolbert had two saves and played all 90 minutes and played in both overtimes.

I felt confident coming into the game, I had more incentive to come out stronger for the game this year, I felt pretty good about the game tonight, Wolbert said.

Going into the half the team neither team scored a goal. The second half was an offensive game for both teams.

Scoring for Eastern Michigan was Katie Lozar with 8:26 left in regulation.

In less than a minute Zips Rachel Philip scored, tying the game up 1-1 with 7:41 left in regulation.

It was very relieving, trying to get back into the net, it was great, sophomore Rachel Philip said.

The game stayed tied at the end of regulation and went into two ten minute overtimes to end the game with a final score 1-1.

We did everything to play the game, we were good enough to beat them, we need to prove it, Pfau said.

On Sunday the Zips took on the Central Michigan Chippewas (7-3). This game can be explained in this phrase, hard nose aggressive Zipss soccer.

This game was a defensive game, because both teams lacked offense. The Zips only had two shots by Junior Jordan Baranowski and senior Britini Back.

We were a little flat. Friday’s game took some out of us, but we made it competitive, Pfau said.

The Chippewas seemed stronger, faster and more conditioned than the Zips.

Still, the Zips brought everything they had against the Chippewas.

Early in the game, Zips Alysia Vinkler scored a goal to have it taken away by a miss call by the referee.

Basically the referee made the wrong call, it should have been a drop ball, but he blew the whistle and the referee could not change it, Pfau said.

On one of Central Michigan’s shots, goaltender Jeny Wolbert looked more like a wide receiver than a goaltender, jumping and diving to catch the ball on one save.

At the end of regulation the game was tied 0-0, and it for the second time this weekend the Zips took a game into double overtime.

This game ended on a sad note in the second overtime. On a throw in by Chippewas the ball bounced off a Zips player and bounced right past Wolbert to win the game 1-0.

We played at the best of our capabilities, last year we would have lost this game 3-0, we have come a long way, and we stayed in the game, Pfau said.

The Zips will travel up to Michigan on Oct. 2 to take on the Western Michigan Broncos.

The next time the Zips play at home will be on Oct. 16 against the Miami Redhawks.
