UA homecoming week officially began yesterday with the Office/Department Decorating Contest. Office areas and departments have been encouraged to decorate in celebration of homecoming week and in preparation for the football game.

Offices and departments that wanted to decorate were required to register with the Department of Student Life by yesterday evening.

Those who are too late to decorate their own office space can still enjoy the decorations of others throughout the week.

Today’s entertainment includes a performance by comedian Dan Ahdoot. The free performance is sponsored by the Residence Hall Programming Board and the Zips Programming Network.

It will be held at 9:09 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

Ahdoot, having performed at over 200 colleges around the nation, has also been on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Central’s Premium Blend and ABC’s 20/20 with Barbara Walters.

He also has experience as a writer on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers and is a writer for the new MTV sketch comedy show Short Circuitz along with Nick Cannon.

The annual homecoming parade will be held Thursday and will begin at 8 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Hall.

The Spirit Parade will travel through Buchtel Common, Union Street, Carroll Common, Carroll Street and Wolf Ledges. It will end at E.J. Thomas Hall, where the homecoming king and queen candidates will promptly be announced.

The parade will be made up of student organizations, athletic teams and residence halls, all of which will be competing for cash prizes. Offices and departments will be participating as well.

There will also be a Spirit Parade after party beginning at 9 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Hall’s Stage Door where Hooked on Tonics will play. Hailing from Canton, Hooked on Tonics plays rock, hip-hop, funk and soul.

The winners of the Office/Department Decorating Contest will also be announced at the after party.

Homecoming weekend will kick off on Friday with the annual homecoming dance. The theme of this year is Enchanted Paradise and is sponsored by ZPN. It will feature D.J. Seth Miller.

I’m not sure how many homecoming dances UA has had, but I do know that it’s a long-standing tradition, ZPN president Nick Krolikoski said.

Krolikoski explained that the University Program Board, ZPN’s predecessor, used to host the homecoming dance every year.

The dance will be held in the Student Union Ballroom from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be a cash bar and complimentary appetizers.

Tickets are $12 when purchased at the Student Union Information Desk before the dance and cost $15 at the door.

The king and queen will be crowned at the dance.

Friday will also be a time of reunion and fun for UA alumni.

The Inaugural Blue and Gold Soul homecoming Alumni Celebration will begin at 7:30 p.m. at E.J. Thomas Hall, where Morris Day and the Time will be performing.

To wrap up homecoming week, UA will face Ohio University on Saturday at the Infocision Stadium. The Zipsfest pre-game party will begin at 3 p.m. at the Carroll Street circle and kickoff will be at 6 p.m.
